Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMGAY) previously named as Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) is a social welfare flagship program, created by the Indian government to provide housing to the rural poor in India. a similar scheme for urban poor was launched in 2015 by housing for all in 2022.Indira Awas Yojana was launched in 1985 by Rajiv Gandhi then the prime minister of India has launched this scheme with the name of Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana .it is one of the major flagship programs of the ministry of rural development to construct houses for BPL (below poverty line) in the villages.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana scheme has provided the construction of houses.these houses were equipped with facilities such as tolities,LPG connection, electricity connection and drinking water with other schemes such as Swach Bharat Abhiyan Toilets ,Ujjwala Yojana LPG Gas Connection,saubhagya Yojana Electricity Connection E.T.C. The houses are allotted with the name of the women or jointly between husband and wife. he construction of the houses is the sole responsibility of the beneficiary and engagement of contractors is strictly prohibited.
Purpose of Implementing Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana.
The broad purpose of this scheme is to provide the financial assistance to some of the weakest section of the society for them to upgrade or construct a house of respectable quality for their personal living that they did not harm with any of the construction facilities.the vision of the government is to replace the temporary houses and make the permanent houses for all the rural people.
the funds are allocated to the state based on 75% weightage of the rural housing shortage and 25 % weightage of poverty ratio.the housing shortage as per the official published figures of Registrar General Of India based on the 2001 census.
What was the imapct of Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana.
Since 1985,25.2 million houses have been constructed under this scheme.under the Bharat Nirman Phase-1 project,6 million houses were targeted and 7.1 million are actually constructed from 2005-2006 to 2008-2009.Additional 12 million houses are planned to be constructed and renovated under the Bharat Nirman Phase-2. According to the official 2001 figures, the total rural housing shortage was 14.825 million houses.
Who is eligible for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?
- Economically Weaker Section-families with an annual income up to Rs 3 lakh.
- Low Income Group-families with an annual income between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 6 lakh.
- Middle Income Group 1-families within annual income up to between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 12 lakh.
- Middle Income Group 2-families with an annual income up to between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 12 lakh.
- Women-belonging to EWS and LIG categories.
- Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and other backward classes.
- The individual must not avail of the benefit of any other housing scheme by the state or central government.
